Sometimes we used to go on picnics with Guruji and his family. I was very surprised that a person like him would take the time to go with students for trips out of the city. There we had the chance to talk to him and he was compassionate and kind to everyone. Just as he could be strong and demanding
in the class, he could be equally gentle and interested in everyone outside the class. The possibility of knowing this other side of Guruji helped me to have more respect and affection for him.
Guruji was very fast and efficient. In a group of 30 people he could adjust them all. That's when you knew the power of the man, the strength that he had. Even in a difficult twisting pose like Ardha Matsyendrasana, he would tie you up into knots or he would be lifting you up in full arm balance, or flip-ping you over to Viparita Chakrasana and he would do it very fast.
He was unique so his classes were unique. His methodology, his way of teaching, his use of props, all were new and exciting. His way of doing yoga was nothing like the yoga I had experienced before his classes. He would go around and correct every student often and in every pose. He monitored us closely, he corrected us constantly and he kept us humble at all times. Nothing escaped his vision and, if he wanted to, he would turn that intensity and vision on you personally and you would learn how to work with yourself, and how to work with him. He really cared about us and if we stuck with him then he was always there for us. You always felt that he was talking directly to you even if he wasn't. He didn't let you slack off for a moment. He had an incredible amount of pure energy.
